Becoming the Best Version of Yourself
If there's one
thing that the year 2020 has taught us, besides wearing masks and social
distancing, it is that it's every man for himself out here. Being in
quarantine, often far away from your loved ones, indeed got us thinking about
how you are your own best friend.
When you use
this idea to think about the things you want to change about yourself, you
conclude that there is only one person that can help you; YOU. Knowing your
strengths, weaknesses, passions, insecurities, no one in the world knows you
better than you know yourself, which is why it is essential to understand that
YOU have to take the initiative to bring about the change you want to see.
"You can't just sit there and wait for
people to give you that golden dream. You've got to get out there and make it
happen for yourself." - Diana Ross
People often
talk about becoming the "best" version of ourselves. However, this is
a subjective measure. Everyone is different and has their own definitions of
what they believe is perfect. What one person deems perfect might be nowhere
close to it for another. Therefore, becoming the "best" version of
yourself is a subjective matter and should be dealt with as such.
In simpler
words, you can only become the best version of yourself when you do it only for
yourself. This means not worrying about the likings of other people or thinking
about what they might think of you. When you have to do something for yourself,
there should be no judgment attached to it.
"The important thing is to realize that
no matter what people's opinions maybe, they're only just that – people's
opinions. You have to believe in your heart what you know to be true about
yourself. And let that be that." - Mary J Blige
One of the first
and foremost steps of becoming the best person you can be is, to be honest with
yourself. Many people often think they don't know what they want from life. The
truth is they know it better than anyone else. What they don't know is how to
let go of generic rationalizations, excuses, and self-doubt. Focusing on what you
want and chasing that goal without paying attention to any soul-sucking habits
can make you a better person in itself.
Another trait that is your holy grail when it comes to becoming a better version of yourself is curiosity. Curiosity is the mother of the desire to learn. Becoming a better person is, essentially, learning. If you're not eager to learn, it can be challenging for you to change things. When you have a curious mind about everything, you are more inclined to ask the right questions.
Curiosity and
the desire to learn make you more open-minded. Open-mindedness is one of the
fundamental traits of a growth-orientated, likable person. Moreover, learning
about different things, and especially people, can help you achieve a
well-rounded perspective about life. You can begin learning through reading
books, watching documentaries, and merely listening to people when you talk to
them.
"The minute that you're not learning, I
believe you're dead." - Jack
Nicholson
